Are You a Person Who Creates Your Future Self?
If you think back through your life, you will be able to see times where you created who your Future Self would be.
Maybe it was getting married.
As a child you may have played make believe. Then later you dated with the idea that you would meet the person you would marry. Then you got engaged, planned a wedding and then the day arrived.
Or maybe it was going to college, getting a new job, moving to a different part of the country, joining the armed services.....
As children, we naturally know how to create the Future Self we want to be. Whether it was to walk, ride a bike, play a sport, or drive a car, you dreamed, made believe, and practiced until you were that person.
You believed, "I am the kind of person that....." and the thought, and associated feelings, is what drove you to date, make grades for the scholarship, practiced a sport so you could be on the team.....
What do you want to create in your life now?
And are you spending time thinking about who you want to be?
As adults, often we spend more time thinking about what we believe is our reality, instead of what we really want.
So, how do we create the Future Self we want to be?
First we decide what we want to create.
Once you know what you want to create, spend some time saying it out loud. A great way to do this is talking to yourself in the mirror. Using "I am" statements you begin to tell your brain that this is the type of person you are.
Such as, I am a person who has a side hustle that is more fun than work!
Then start doing activities that will support what you want to become.
So, if you want to start a side hustle, you will begin to look at the options. You look for options that feel like fun to you. Then you start investigating how they work, how much time it will take, and what you will need to learn.
Then as you are doing this, you will begin to imagine what it will feel like when you start your side hustle, you are making extra money, and doing something you love.
Just like you did when you wanted to get married, get a new job, or go to college. You will imagine yourself there. Feel what it will be like, and pretend you are already there.
Then you start practicing. Maybe you take a job in an area that is similar if you want to start a business, or you get a mentor to help you start a business, or you look for a job that will match your desires.
Then the next thing you know, you will be there. Because all along you believed you were that person.
In brain science we call this confirmation bias. Because you believed, practiced, and even felt like you were already there, your brain automatically started to see more opportunities that match what you are telling it you want.
Be careful though....
Our brain loves to tell us that we don't have time, or we don't have skills, and many other reasons why it can't come true,
Just like when you were a child, you get to decide, believe, practice, pretend, until it shows up in your life!
